American-Scandinavian Foundation of Los Angeles (ASFLA) is an all-volunteer not-for-profit cultural and educational organization with an international spirit founded in 1939. It is dedicated to friendship and exchange between the five Scandinavian countries and the U.S., and promotes ethnic heritage as a celebration of diversity. Proceeds from all ASFLA activities and events endow a scholarship program for upper-division and graduate students at LA-area colleges and universities. Norwegian clarinetist Roger Arve Vigulf performs two concerts at California State University, Los Angeles, at 8 p.m. June 2 and 4. June 2 features a solo recital of clarinet and clarinet plus computer, and June 4 features American composer Morton Gould's "Divertimento" for clarinet and jazz band http://smart-trading.ph/iq-option-x-apk-download with the CSULA Jazz Orchestra. Congratulations to the 2003 scholarship recipients (photo, from L): Nancy Mockros, a doctoral candidate at Fuller Theological Seminary, of Swedish/Norwegian heritage, whose areas of interest are theology and culture with an emphasis in film. She authored a non-published book on the Scandinavian pietists; Anna Ray Alury, a first-year medical student at UCLA, of Finnish heritage; and Anna Martina Scl��r (not pictured), a pediatric nurse and UCLA undergraduate student, of Finnish/Swedish heritage, studying biopsychology and medicine. The fifth annual Scandinavian Film Festival of Los Angeles returned Jan. 16, 17 and 18, 2004, to the Writers Guild Theatre in Beverly Hills. The festival screened contemporary Scandinavian films submitted to the Academy Awards� for consideration as nominees in the Best Foreign-Language Film category, as well as a variety of current feature films, short subjects and documentaries from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. It's the home for Scandinavian film in Hollywood. "Nordic Designs in Renaissance L.A." was theme for the 21st annual ASFLA Fall Scandinavian Festival on Sat., Oct. 18, 2003. The festival unfolded at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising at Grand Hope Park on the corner of 9th and Hope Streets in the "new" downtown Los Angeles -- blocks from the Staples Center. Every year, ASFLA launches the holiday season with its annual Holiday Ball at the elegant and historic Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles. The black-tie event features dinner, cocktails, live music, ballroom dancing, a silent auction and Santa Lucia procession. The highlight of the 2002 ball, on Dec. 7, was the announcement of Danish journalist Sven Rye as recipient of the 2002 Scandinavian of the Year award.
